Do you sleep well? I’m sure that even if you do, there are times where you simply can’t fall asleep no matter how much you try. I get it. I’ve been that way for years. On those nights, lavender essential oil is the only thing that really works well for me.
One of the simplest ways that I have been able to fight the insomnia is with this DIY lavender body lotion. Sure, I could just apply lavender oil, but this fragrant body lotion not only helps me sleep but also moisturizes at the same time! It’s a win/win for anyone who suffers from excessively dry skin! This DIY is a cream, but if you prefer more of a balm or ointment, THIS DIY lavender sleep balm is just as amazing!
What is Lavender Body Lotion Good for?
As I already said, this homemade lavender body lotion not only calms your mind and body so you can relax at bedtime, but it also moisturizes your dry areas amazingly! Made from just three ingredients – shea butter, coconut oil and essential oil – it is quite literally pure moisturizer!
The shea butter and coconut oil are the moisturizing ingredients. Lavender also has amazing benefits for the skin but in this DIY, it is the aromatherapy aspects that work the best.
Where Do You Put Lavender Lotion for Sleep?
Once you have made your own DIY lavender body lotion, you can use it wherever you need a bit of moisturizing. However, for sleep use, apply to the wrists and behind the ears. This will allow you to smell the scent without it being too over powering. If behind the ears is too much for you, simply apply to the inner wrists instead.
Can I substitute lotion ingredients?
Yes and no. You need two solid ingredients to make the lavender lotion base. This means you can likely exchange shea butter for cocoa butter or mango seed butter, but I have never tried it.
You could also use a different essential oil if you want to create a different scent. However, the coconut oil must be used as it is one of the binding ingredients.
How to Thicken Homemade Lavender Lotion
If your lotion is too thin and you absolutely can not get it to thicken, melt the two butters together and add a bit of xanthan gum into it. Xanthan gum will help to bind the ingredients together and make it thicker. Be careful that you don’t add too much. You won’t need much at all.

- Add to a larger bowl and beat on high for approx. 1 minute.

Notes
- To use: Use as a normal body butter or lotion. This is especially helpful at night to help you relax into sleep.
- Because this has coconut oil in it, it will melt at temps above 72°F or so. In this case, storing it in the fridge is best. Allow to come to room temp for use.
- If you do find it has melted, simply repeat the steps to whip it back up.
