When the weather starts to cool down, I often find myself reaching for my comfort foods. Chicken and noodles, chili and for breakfast, a warm bowl of homemade oatmeal. While I love strawberries and cream oatmeal, one of my all time favorites is a homemade apple cinnamon oatmeal. There’s something about the combination of warm oats, tender apples, and a sprinkle of ground cinnamon that feels so comforting to me.
How to Make a Homemade Apple Oatmeal Recipe?
Homemade oatmeal is great on its own but freshen it up with a few ingredients and it becomes amazing. While this is an apple cinnamon oatmeal recipe, you can change it up with a few spices like nutmeg and by using things like peanut butter or brown sugar. Adding granola, raisins or nuts like almonds, pecans or walnuts on top can also take the flavor to the next level.
It’s also incredibly affordable. A single container of oats can feed a family for days without going over budget. Its a great way to stretch your grocery budget without feeling as if you’re missing out on flavor.
But the instant oatmeal packets you get at the store are packed with preservatives that you may not want your family to eat and are also extremely expensive for what they are. You’ll pay upwards of $2.00 for a box of six or eight packets when you can make a full batch of 15 this for not much more than that.
When you’re making this homemade apple cinnamon oatmeal, you can decide if you want to make an instant oatmeal mix or to make an old-fashioned oatmeal mix using steel cut oats. Both are cooked on the stovetop but instant will cook faster. Old fashioned oats or steel cut will require that you actually cook the oats the day you eat them. What this recipe covers is an instant oatmeal mix that you will store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use it.
Tips for making apple cinnamon oatmeal
If this recipe doesn’t have enough sweetness for you, you can sweeten it with a drizzle of maple syrup, vanilla extract or honey. You will also want to use a sweet apple such as gala or honeycrisp. For a more tart taste, use granny smith apples or some other sweet-tart apples.
You can also add extra spices if you want. I personally love cinnamon spice oatmeal but I love the apple cinnamon flavor so much I want to combine them. That means I usually add extra spices such as a pinch of nutmeg or allspice to my own bowls. For family, I tend to leave those out. You can also give it a flavor boost by using apple juice when you make it instead of water.
