Christmas has always been my favorite time of the year and one of the things I enjoy most about the season is making my home look warm, inviting and full of Christmas cheer. One very simple way to do this is with Christmas crafts like these DIY coasters made from ceramic tiles.

These coasters made from tile are great for anyone who is looking to bring some warmth to their home without spending a lot of time doing so. They’re a simple DIY that also works well as a kids craft as long as they have adult supervision.

This year, more than ever, I have needed the warmth and soul-soothing goodness that comes at Christmas time. But even more so, I have needed Christmas music and all that comes with it.

Did you know I sing? I have since I could barely walk and was professionally trained until I was sixteen. Music is hugely important in my life and one way this manifests is that I collect sheet music. I love to see the notes move on the staff to create something that can channel emotions, heal, lift up or bring up memories the way only music can.

So it wasn’t a hard decision for me to make the tile coasters and cover them with sheet music. If you want to learn how to make coasters from tile and sheet music, keep reading!

What is the best material to make coasters out of?

DIY coasters can be made from several different materials and their are thousands of tutorials on the net using all of those materials. Cork coasters, wood slices, tile, resin using a silicone mold and others are all used to make homemade coasters. I personally think that tile is the best material though.

Ceramic coasters made with tile are sturdy enough to sit on the coffee table and do their job but also look great while they’re doing it too!

What other papers can I use to make coasters?

I love using scrapbook paper for any of my DIY projects, you don’t have to use them for these if you don’t want. A fun way to change it up is to use magazine pages or fabric scraps to decorate them. You could even use spray paint or decorate them with a paint pen or two.

That’s the thing about crafts like this. They’re yours and are just waiting on you to make them what you want them to be!

How do you make homemade coasters waterproof?

No one wants to spend the time to make coasters our of tile and sheet music only to have them used once and falling apart. To prevent that, you’ll need to seal them to make your homemade coasters waterproof.

In our tutorial below, we use a couple thin coats of Mod Podge to create the seal making them waterproof. However, if you would rather use a spray or are worried about brush strokes or air bubbles, you can do that as well. Just be sure you’re using a waterproof spray that is meant for paper crafts so it is not too heavy for your coasters. I personally like the Mod Podge spray as well. It’s an acrylic sealer does what I need it to without being overly heavy.
