The issue with buying essential oils is two fold; either they’re ridiculously expensive or you can never be sure of the quality/they’re not pure.
Since essential oils are so potent, making sure the oils you’re using are pure is incredibly important. Using oils that are not pure could lead to a whole lot of bad juju you just don’t want to deal with.
But, despite how difficult it may seem, it is possible to buy safe essential oils on a budget. Over the years I have learned a few tips to help you do it.
Can EO Really Be “Therapeutic Grade?”
I’m sure you’ve seen the phrase “therapeutic grade” being tossed around in context to essential oils so you might be wondering if essential oils really can be a therapeutic grade.
I mean really, have you seen how many essential oils on Amazon are supposedly therapeutic grade?
The answer is no and those two words are simply a marketing tactic.
Now calm down and hear me out because I imagine I just made some people angry with the fact that I said they can not exist.
There are no federal guidelines nor is there a federal grading system for essential oils. I could bottle a bottle of water with watered down lemon juice juice and call it lemon essential oil.
Because there are no guidelines or grading system, there is quite literally no way for an oil to be theraputic grade.
Cheap or expensive, all that matters is an oils purity. Not that its “therapeutic grade.”
How to Tell If An Essential Oil is Pure
So, how do you tell if an oil is pure essential oil if you can’t go by the words therapeutic grade?
GC/MS testing.
GC/MS stands for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. To put it simpoly; it is a labratory test that looks for impurities in a test sample. Any reputable oil company will have their oils GC/MS tested by a third party lab to verify purity.
