Did you brush your teeth this morning? I sure hope so! 🙂 Did you use a store bought toothpaste or a fresh batch of homemade toothpaste made right in your own home? I did and I can’t even begin to tell you how much I adore my homemade toothpaste recipe!
I’ve used other DIY toothpaste recipes, but this DIY whitening toothpaste is by far the best I’ve ever tried. There’s a reason I’ve used it for over five years!
This DIY toothpaste uses ingredients that are not terribly expensive so it makes it a great option for anyone who is looking to stop spending so much on things at the store.
This was the main reason I began making it way back when.
How to Make Homemade Toothpaste
This homemade toothpaste uses coconut oil, sea salt, baking soda and Xylitol to create the base. Add a quick essential oil for flavor and you’ve got an amazing DIY whitening toothpaste that you will never stop using!
I promise; this is about to become your favorite toothpaste ever!
How to Make DIY Whitening Toothpaste
This DIY whitening toothpaste uses baking soda as it’s main whitening ingredient, however, if you would like to give it a bit of a whitening boost, you can add a tiny bit of peroxide to the mixture.
However, if you do this, be sure not to swallow any as you brush your teeth. The other ingredients are edible and while a small amount of swallowed peroxide will not harm you, it’s best to avoid it if possible.
How to Flavor Homemade Toothpaste
As you make your DIY toothpaste, you will want to add a flavor of your choosing to it. Otherwise, with baking soda, sea salt and coconut oil, it will taste rather salty.
Since you’re using ingredients that are strong flavored on their own, it’s best to counter those with a strong ingredient as well. Essential Oils work best for this.
I personally prefer to make a DIY mint toothpaste by using peppermint essential oil, however, you can flavor it with whatever you choose. Sweet orange oil would also be a great option.
You Will Need:
- 1/4 c. coconut oil
- 1/4 c. baking soda
- 1 tsp. Xylitol
- 1/2 tsp. Sea Salt
- 10-15 drops Peppermint essential oil (optional)
- 2 Tbsp. distilled water
- 1 tbsp peroxide (optional)
Supplies Needed:
- Small Saucepan
- Refillable Toothpaste Tube or
- Glass Jar with Lid
- Measuring Spoons
- Liquid Measuring Cup
- Spoon
In a small saucepan, heat the coconut oil over low heat until it is just melted. Be careful not to allow it to get too hot. Coconut oil has a low melting point of around 76°F so it will melt very quickly and easily.
Once melted, remove from the heat and stir in the baking soda, Xylitol, sea salt and water. If you are using peroxide, add it now as well.
Stir well until it’s fully mixed. The water should cool it a bit but if not, allow it to cool for 2-3 minutes, but not long enough that it hardens back up.
DIY Mint Toothpaste
Once it’s cooled a bit, stir in the peppermint essential oil and mix well. Make sure you give the mixture time to cool since heat is the enemy of essential oils. If it is too hot, it will ruin the oil.
After you’ve mixed the oils together with the rest of the homemade toothpaste, store it in a jar with a lid or a toothpaste tube in a cool place.
