None of us like not being able to wear our favorite shirt or outfit because of stains, but the stain removers you get at the store are often incredibly expensive for what they are. Instead, making a homemade stain remover will only cost you a few pennies on the dollar and works just as well as the stuff you buy.

Making a homemade stain remover spray that works may seem difficult, but it is super easy. In fact, my recipe for one only includes four ingredients with three optional ingredients based on the clothing you’re treating and the stain you’re treating.

What Ingredients Make Up DIY Stain Remover Spray?

For this recipe, we will use baking soda, white vinegar, table salt and lemon essential oil or lemon juice. This combo alone is a powerful stain fighter. If you’re dealing with a particularly stubborn stain, you can also add blue Dawn dish soap and/or hydrogen peroxide.

If you want a more natural version that smells amazing, use lemon essential oil in place of lemon juice and Dr. Bronners castile soap in place of the Dawn.

These ingredients combined together in a glass spray bottle create a powerful combo that works to remove stains from your clothes and saves you money at the same time.

A couple warnings about this homemade stain remover

Both lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide can have a bleaching effect on clothing. So, it is best to test on an inconspicuous area to be certain it is not going to bleach your favorite pieces. Doing this before you spray the full area will let you know if the clothing is safe to use this spray on. Just spray a little on the piece of clothes and allow it to air dry to test.

How to Use Homemade Stain Removal Spray

Once you’ve tested the area, using your DIY stain removal spray is as simple as pie. Simply spray the stain with the spray, scrub it into the fabric and wash as normal. Easy peasy lemon squeezy, right?

Adding salt to the recipe helps to scrub the stain out of the clothing and the other ingredients are great at stain fighting. All without harmful chemicals and expensive prices.
