Earning money for receipts is a fantastic way to get paid for buying groceries. These 11 apps will let you get money for receipts helping you to save money on food every time you shop!

These days going to the grocery store can resemble your favorite horror movie. With retailers and manufacturers raising prices seemingly daily, I think I am pretty safe to say that we’re all feeling the squeeze.

And unfortunately, it isn’t looking like we’re going to see a price drop anytime soon which means we’re all very likely looking for ways to save money when we’re grocery shopping that goes beyond sales ads and the store loyalty program.

Coupons and shopping sales are still valid ways to save money on food. Menu planning and knowing retailer sales cycles are as well.

But there are ways to save money that most people aren’t aware of. Such as scanning receipts and getting cash back for them.

How Can I Get Money for Receipts?

Most receipt scanning apps work the same way although there are three different types of apps you should be using to maximize your receipt scanning earnings. Using all three types together will let you earn as many rewards as possible back.

The first type of receipt scanning app are the true cashback apps. With these apps, you will be shown offers that you can earn cash prizes or points for when you buy that product. This can be an incredibly useful way to save money when you don’t have a coupon, need an item that doesn’t typically have coupons or want to stack to make a deal.

The second type is the general receipt scanner. These will pay you points or cash for almost any type of receipt. This type can take a bit longer to reach the minimum payment threshold, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less valuable as a rebate app.

The final type are the ones that scan your debit card and online purchases for receipts. From there you are given points or coins that you can turn into gift cards such as Starbucks or Amazon, cash into your Paypal account or by direct deposit and sometimes even physical prizes.

Are Apps that Pay for Receipts Legit?

Like everything, I am sure there are apps like this that aren’t. However, I want to make something perfectly clear to you.

This blog is my income. I don’t hide that fact and I never have.

The trust of my blog readers is EVERYTHING. Without that trust, I can’t help support my family.

Because of this, I personally test every single app or website that I recommend long before I ever put it on this site.

The 11 apps that will pay money for receipts listed below are all 100% legit. I have been paid multiple times from each one, on time, every time.

And I have no doubt that once you’ve gotten started, you will be paid as well.

What Apps Give You Money for Receipts?

As I said, I have personally tested and currently use the apps below. As you go through the list, you’ll want to do a couple of things:

  • Use a valid email address; preferably your Paypal email so you can receive Paypal payments easier.
  • Always click the link in the confirmation email they send you. This confirms that your email is real which is important for receiving gift cards and account notifications.
  • Always be sure to check the offer conditions if you’re using a cashback app.

Ibotta

Ibotta is by far my favorite app that pays money for scanning receipts. It’s also one of the OG apps of this type. When you create an Ibotta account, you’ll gain access to thousands of cashback rebate offers at a ton of different stores like Walmart, Walgreens, Kroger and many more. Add the offers to your account and head to your favorite retailer. Buy the product you have rebates for in-store then snap a picture of your receipt and you’re good to go! You can also add your store loyalty card or your account information for instant redemption to a lot of places.

Payment Information: Offers hundreds of gift cards including Amazon gift cards, Walmart gift cards and more. Paypal and direct deposit options are also available. Minimum thresholds for payment start at $20.00. Paypal payments and gift cards are usually instant. Direct deposit can take 3-5 days to post in your account.

What Makes Ibotta Great: Offers “any” rebates for things that do not normally offer coupons such as fresh milk, meat and so on. Most offers allow stacking with coupons, however, certain ones do not. Be sure to check all rebate offer terms for this information.

Create an Ibotta Account

Fetch Rewards

Fetch Rewards is a combo of a cashback app and a general receipt app. They have plenty of offers like Ibotta but also do general receipts. Scan any and all of your receipts to earn at least a few points for each! One point is equal to $0.01. Like Ibotta, snap a photo of your receipt to earn points. When you create your Fetch Rewards account, be certain you also connect your Amazon and email accounts. This will allows you to scan for e-receipts which will get you even more points!

Payment Information: Fetch pays only in gift cards. They have around fifty or so choices including Amazon, CVS, and many more. If you prefer cash, they do offer a Visa gift card payment option. Minimum payment threshold is $10.00 or 10,000 points.

What Makes Fetch Great: I love the e-receipt option. When I first connected my account, I got $9.00 just from those! They are also one of the only apps that pay money for receipts that give me store specific offers that are not item specific. For instance, I currently have an offer that will pay me $20.00 back when I spend $40.00 at Albertsons. That’s a HUGE 50% savings on any food I want!

Create a Fetch Rewards Account & Get a 3,000 point Bonus

Swagbucks

Swagbucks is the site I have been a member of for the longest and it is still one of my favorites! Most people, even current members, don’t realize you can earn points for your receipts! It’s under the stores tab and works like Ibotta. Add the offers – most are not brand specific – to your account, shop, and upload your receipt. Point values range from 2 points up and are a great way to boost your earnings!

Payment Information: Swagbucks pays in both gift cards and Paypal. Gift cards are availalbe to hundreds of stores including Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target and Amazon. They also offer both Visa and AmEx gift cards. Once you cash out, your gift card or Paypal payment will take 7-10 days on average to reach you, however, a lot of the time, I get mine a lot quicker most of the time.

What I love about Swagbucks: There are so many ways to earn points with Swagbucks that it would take an entire post dedicated just to explain. Earn points for searching the web, playing games, watching videos and more! It is literally impossible not to earn if you’re a member!

Rakuten

Rakuten is a true cash-back app. When you sign up for a Rakuten account, you can shop through them at thousands of retailers. Since Rakuten has a special relationship with each of those retailers, you get some of the cash you spent passed back to you.

Payment information: Rakuten pays once a quarter. This means money earned from Oct-December is paid around March and so on. Payment options are paper check or Paypal.

What I love about Rakuten: Rakuten is the one site that makes it possible to get cash back on stores you otherwise might not be able to. This means you can get cashback for everything you buy almost. Clothing, shoes, toys, home goods and so much more.

Create a Rakuten Account and Get $10 Free on Your First $25 or more order

Receipt Hog

Receipt Hog is a general receipt app. There is a limit to the number of receipts you can scan each week but they can be from any store or gas stations out there. When you scan your receipts, you’ll earn spins. These spins get you coins. Cash your coins in for Paypal or gift card.

Payment Information: Cash points out for Paypal payments or Amazon gift cards. Payment can take a few days after you request it.

What I love about Receipt Hog: I love that they accept pretty much any receipt. This makes it easy to earn points. Plus, the spin game is super fun! They also offer e-receipts too!

Create A Receipt Hog Account & Get 5 Free Spins

Shopkick

Shopkick is another app that has multiple ways to earn while you’re in the store. Scanning product barcodes and check in while you’re there is the easiest way of all! Of course you can also earn from scanning receipts, shopping online and linked debit cards. They also offer bonus points for watching videos.

Payment Information: Shopkick pays by Paypal or gift gift cards. When you sign up, you’ll choose a gift card, however, you can change that option later. They have quite a few to choose from meaning you can save money wherever you want. Payments can take a few days to receive once you request it.

What I love about Shopkick: I love that you don’t need to buy things in order to earn points! Scanning barcodes in store will earn points which means you can actually earn totally free! It can actually make grocery shopping fun since you know you’re earning points or “kicks” at the same time!

Bonus Info: When you download the app and create your Upside account, be SURE to use promo code SAVE161836 at sign up. You’ll get bonus kicks when you do!

Create Your ShopKick Account & Use Code SAVE161836 for Bonus Points

Upside

Upside is one of my new favorites and I’ll tell you why; you can save money on gasoline, and get cashback on restaurants! When you create your account, you’ll add a debit card. Activate the offers you want and then get gas or order your meal. Getting your rebate and cashback is super easy from there since it pulls it from your debit card!

Payment Information: Upside pays as rebates to your bank account or with gift card. There4 are quite a few gift cards to choose from including Amazon, Google Play, CVS, and more! They also have a Paypal option. Minimum payouts start at $10.00. Paypal and bank are $15.00 minimum or a $1 fee for less.

What I love about Upside: Cashback on gas and pizza! Need I say more?

Bonus Info: When you download the app and create your Upside account, be SURE to use my referral code STACY46284 at sign up. This will give you an extra $0.15/gallon off your first gas purchase after you join!

Create Your Upside Account – Use Promo Code STACY46284 for an Extra $0.15 off per gallon to Get You Started

Receipt Pal

Receipt Pal is another like Receipt Hog. Submit any receipt including e-receipts for points. You’ll get 4 receipt cards to fill up each week. They also offer bonus points and sweepstakes entries too.

Payment information: Rewards are cashed out based on points. You can choose Amazon gift cards or e-gift cards. There are 3 levels of reward tiers to choose from.

What I love about Receipt Pal: General receipts again! I think it’s just fantastic when you can earn from any receipt. You can also connect different accounts than some of the others have. Kroger and their affiliates, Instacart, Starbucks and more!

Coupons.com

Coupons.com used to be solely printable coupons, but these days they’re moving more into the digital world by paying for scanned receipts. The app and cashback works a lot like Ibotta with a couple of exceptions. You’ll need to activate any offers you want in order to claim them. Also, most coupons.com rebates can not be double stacked with a coupon. This can limit how much you can earn from them.

Payment information: Coupons.com pays the rebate amount directly to your Paypal account.

What I love about the Coupons.com app: While not being able to stack these rebates with coupons does limit how often you can redeem, it also means that you can very often find a rebate or “coupon” that isn’t available elsewhere. They also allow you to add your store loyalty card or account info to make submitting easier.

Create Your Coupons.com Account

Checkout 51

Checkout 51 is the other OG receipt scanning app. While they don’t offer as many rebates as some of the others, they are still a valid way to make money with receipts and just another money saving tool to help you get money for receipts.

Payment information: Checkout 51 only offers payment by check. The minimum amount to be paid is $20.00.

What I love about Checkout 51: Checkout 51 has offers that I do not see anywhere else. They’re often for things that don’t have coupons. These exclusive offers make it worth using.

Create Your Checkout 51 Account

CoinOut

CoinOut is another that connects to your bank account and this one was featured on Shark Tank! They do this securely through Plaid. They are a general receipts app that pays you for a whole lot of a whole lot. Basically anything! Once you’ve created your account, you can also connect your email, amazon, Walmart and Instacart accounts. This will ensure you never miss a receipt!

Payment Information: CoinOut offers payment by Paypal, Zelle or Amazon gift card.

What I Love About CoinOut: This is one of the more easy apps to work with. Once you’ve connected your accounts, it’s pretty well hands off except making sure your accounts are being scanned weekly. Super simple, right? I also love the fact that you can earn cashback on hotels and flights with this app.

Create Your CoinOut Account

Bonus App:

MistPlay

Do you play games on your phone? Most of us do, right?

Mistplay will pay you for playing them and NO I do not mean gambling.

Mistplay pays you to download and play free Android games! You quite literally do not have to spend a dime to earn points! The more you play, the more you earn!

Payment Information: Mistplay offers payment by gift card. Choose from Amazon and several others!

What I Love About Mistplay: As I am working, I often need to take mental breaks to keep myself motivated. Mistplay and playing games allows me to do that and to get paid for it. I can’t think of much better than playing around and making money for it at the same time!

Create Your Mistplay Account

Which Receipt App Gives the Most Cash Back?

Honestly, this can be a toss up between Ibotta and Fetch. Both give considerable amounts back depending on your purchases. For instance, my last Fetch scan of my email was over $16.00 plus about $20 in store receipts. My last Ibotta cash out was $40 done over two shopping trips.

Is Ibotta or Fetch Better?

As I said, they’re both pretty on par with each other so I don’t necessarily think one is better than the other. Ibotta is great if you need the products there are rebates for. Fetch is great for the rest of your receipts.

Here’s the really great thing though; there’s nothing saying you can’t use both!
