My family has a long history of loving this country and of serving it. My father and his brothers were all military. Farther back, my ancestors fought in every war that was fought including the Revolutionary War. My late husband was a twice deployed USAF veteran. So, needless to say, we have a pretty big appreciation for patriotic home decor around our homes.
While I love decorating for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, I don’t like going broke to do it. Simply put; I’m cheap and I want to give my home a patriotic touch with the perfect decoration as cheaply as possible. To do that, I do a lot of patriotic crafts. This patriotic flower planter is one of them.
These patriotic flower pot also make a fantastic floral gift. They are especially an ideal gift idea for military or veteran families, but they work equally well for as birthdays and anniversaries. Make the DIY craft as shown below, fill it with live succulents, fresh flowers with a fresh and delightful combination of lush greenery to go with them.
Add a sheer white ribbon, any special instructions they need to care for the plants you planted and a gift tag and your recipient is sure to love it. They’re sure to remember the great gift you made for them!
If you want to take the gift option a bit farther, add a stylish basket with the patriotic planter and fill it with yummy baked goods that your person will enjoy. This way they get a gift to enjoy now and a gift they can enjoy over time as their flowers grow.
What Flower Represents America?
After you have made your American Flag flower pot, you may want to fill it with a flower that represents the United States, right? Obviously, you can fill with any plant type, but for an extra special patriotic touch, plant your favorite roses in it. The rose is the flower that is used to symbolize and represent America so I think it’s a perfect fit for this patriotic flower pots and your patriotic celebration!
I also think these look great with red, white and blue flowers planted together. Honestly, any combo beautiful flowers will look great as long as you use color combinations that compliment the colors of the planter itself. To give things an extra special pop, add a small American flag to the pot with whatever floral arrangements you decide on.
Is this US Flag Flower Pot a Kid Friendly Craft?
Yes! Well, sort of. As written, it isn’t. However, it is incredibly simple to make this patriotic planter craft kid friendly.
To make kid-friendly patriotic flower planters, simply swap the larger flower planter with small terra cotta pots. Give each child their own flower pot and art supplies and let them go to town!
If you are planning on using this as a kids craft, I would recommend that you also use kids art aprons so their clothing is protected if they’re not already wearing play clothes.
How Do I Protect My Stars and Stripes Flower Planter from Weather?
Keeping your planter looking great is pretty simple. Once the finished planter has had time to fully dry, simply add a coat of clear weather sealant to the outside and allow it to fully dry. Once it fully dries, it should be good to go to handle outside weather much better.
If you do plan to seal yours, be sure you do not plant anything edible in it. Weather sealant may have gotten into the inside of your planter and as such, any food grown in it, would likely be contaminated at that point.
