Books are often one of the best ways to develop your child’s mind. For frequent readers, however, books can be very expensive sometimes. When your family budget is already strapped, it may be impossible to buy new eBooks without affecting other areas. Finding places to download free eBooks is sure to help you read till your hearts content and save money at the same time.
You can also save a great deal of money by searching for free e-books that are available for download. It is not uncommon to find coupons for Amazon or Barnes and Noble right in the middle of your search. Using these coupons can sometimes save you as much as 50% off a single book! These coupon codes along with finding places to download free eBooks are a surefire way to save money on the books you want.
How to Download Free Ebooks
To be clear, I am not going to show you how to download eBooks illegally in this post.
We don’t talk about that here.
Since I am an author myself who has had her books illegally copied, I see the illegal downloads in a negative light, as it shows disrespect towards the writers who spent days, weeks and years on their books.
Besides being theft and disrespectful, downloading ebooks illegally also puts your computer or e-reader at risk for viruses, spyware, and other nasty things.
All of these sites that offer free eBooks, and they are all legal.
Below you will find my favorite places to get free audiobooks and free eBooks legally. Take a look because I am sure you will find something that interests you.
Before You Start
If you don’t own an e-reader, Amazon offers the Kindle software as a free download for PC, Mac, Android, and iPhone devices. Although you can purchase a Kindle at a fairly reasonable price today, the software is available for download and use for free. Check out Amazon’s reading apps by clicking HERE.
Download Free eBooks from Amazon
Did you know that Amazon began as an online bookstore? Consequently, it is one of the best places to find free eBooks, paid eBooks, and physical books. Amazon offers a staggering number of books, so finding something to read should be no-problem.
Whatever genre you want to read – whether it’s a fantasy novel with dragons and time travel or a nail-biting mystery – Amazon’s vast selection has it all. The variety of books available on the site includes bestselling series such as Harry Potter or unrecognized titles such as my own, Six Dollar Family.
Amazon still offers physical books for those of us who still like them, but the vast majority of what they offer is available on Kindle. Due to this, they often offer Amazon Kindle credit and other discounts to readers. In addition, Amazon offers thousands of free eBooks everyday making it one of my favorite places to find free eBooks period.

Download Free eBooks from Barnes and Noble
Barnes and Noble is on my list of best places to find free eBooks for a reason. They have a great selection of free eBooks, especially for kids! There are a lot of classic movies you can choose from, including “Alice in Wonderland” and the “Wizard of Oz.“.
Barnes and Noble may not offer as many free eBooks as Amazon, but they do offer more significant discounts. Barnes and Noble coupons can often be found for as much as 50% off. There are thousands of fiction and non-fiction eBooks available for as low as $1.99 each, so these coupons can provide you with more reading material for less money.

College students know how expensive textbooks can be. The costs can really add up for a college student struggling to pay for college, especially if they are trying to pay for college without taking out student loans. You may be able to reduce these costs by renting college textbooks. Chegg offers an excellent program that can help you save quite a bit of money, although it’s not always free. They not only offer textbook rentals, but also up to 90% off when you purchase them, plus free shipping, class notes, tutoring, and free online flashcards. It is definitely worth checking out if you’re a college student who needs quality study materials.
Download Free Audiobooks from Audible
While I enjoy reading, I rarely find the time to sit down and do it. Falling asleep while trying to focus on a book does not count and that is how I “read” most times. If you have the same issues I do, audiobooks are a great option. In addition, they can be a great way to encourage your kids to read, especially if they have trouble sitting down to focus on an eBook or physical book.
The best place to download audiobooks is Audible, and fortunately, it is free to sign up! When you open an Audible account with THIS link, you’ll get access to two free audiobooks to “buy” and unlimited borrowing access to thousands of audiobooks, podcasts, and more free for the first 30 days. For 30-days, you can give it a shot and if you’re not satisfied, you can easily cancel it right in your account. It’s well worth trying if you’d like to read, but don’t have time.

Engaging them in different stories can help them develop a love of reading that will last a lifetime.
Read Free eBooks for Kids from the International Children’s’ Digital Library

In case you don’t have an e-reader, they also provide a free built-in browser to view their books. Besides offering free kid’s books in English, they also offer them in other languages, such as Spanish and Arabic, so it is perfect for kids around the world.

Walmart may be known for its superstores, but they are now expanding into other areas, including audiobooks and eBooks. The service is relatively new, so they’re giving new customers 30 days of free audiobooks. The full details can be found HERE on the Walmart Audiobooks website.

Audiobooks.com is another great place to find free audiobooks. Although it is a paid service, for a limited time they are offering 30 days free. As a result, you will be able to get 3 free audiobooks – two of your choosing and a bonus audiobook from their VIP section. It is a great option for those looking to read on a budget. If after 30-days, you are dissatisfied with the service, it is easy to cancel it. As for me, it’s a great addition to the tools I use and I actually kept my subscription! You can get your three free audiobooks HERE on their website.

Free books have always been available at your local library, but did you know most libraries have entered the digital age? Many of them offer free eBooks and audiobooks as well as physical books! They stay relevant and you’ll always have a place to go to find the free books you want!
The best way to find out if your library has digital books is to check their website. There is usually a section dedicated to digital offerings. You may even be able to download them directly from their website.
