Lilac perfume has been a staple of my life for over a decade. It’s one of my most favorite scents and when I say over a decade; I mean since I was like twelve. When I was younger, I would wear any brand of lilac perfume that smelled good. These days, I would rather have a natural perfume over something that is full of chemical who knows whatsits. Yes. Whatsits is a word. That is why I am so in love with learning how to make lilac perfume! It’s amazing how simple making a DIY perfume with essential oils can be! By the way, if you like this homemade perfume, give my homemade lavender deodorant or my homemade coconut milk shampoo a try. They’re just as easy to make and work great!

Learning how to make natural perfume is a lot easier than most people think. There’s really no reason to have false scents and chemicals in that bottle when nature provides us more than enough scent to create what we want to. Nature has a way of giving us what we need and this DIY perfume with essential oils comes entirely from a process of nature.

How to Make Lilac Perfume

This homemade lilac perfume uses vodka. Vodka is made from potatoes making it a fairly natural product. Yes, it does undergo some chemical processing, but that process is not the same as a chemical additive that has been entirely synthetically created. It also contains lilac essential oil. You can use any brand of essential oil you prefer. Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as therapeutic grade essential oil. The reason for this is because there is no federal grading system for essential oils so anyone can slap a label on that reads therapeutic and get away with it; even if the product is not pure. As long as you’re using pure, uncut and undiluted essential oils, you will be fine. THISis the one I use for my own lilac perfume.

If you would rather not use vodka in your lilac perfume, you can swap it for rubbing alcohol. I personally think it turns out far better using vodka. Vodka seems to blend with the essential oils better than rubbing alcohol does, but it is your homemade perfume and you need to use what you are most comfortable with. This

This homemade perfume recipe can be switched up quite easily too. That’s one of the reasons I love it so much. Feel free to change the essential oils you’re using to change the scent! Other good options are lavender perfume, peppermint perfume, or citrus perfume. I like to keep a few options on hand so I can wear what fits my mood, but I always, always have my lilac perfume made up and ready to go. In fact, it was the very first thing on my list of things to stop buying and make and I didn’t even realize it because I was so young!

You Will Need: This recipe makes 1 bottle of lilac perfume.

  • Perfume sprayer bottle
  • Vodka or Rubbing Alcohol
  • Lilac Essential Oil
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Plastic Pipette

As I said earlier, this homemade perfume is super simple to make. That simplicity is one of the reason I adore natural perfume so much. It’s easy and as much as I don’t like to admit it; I’m quite lazy and love easy things. To make your own natural perfume – no matter what scent you’re using – simply fill your perfume bottle just a bit over half way full with vodka or rubbing alcohol.

Next, take the plastic pipette and fill it almost all the way to the top with jojoba oil. Be sure to leave room for the essential oil. Finally, add 10-15 drops of lilac essential oil (or whichever oil you’re using). Place your caps on, shake well and wear on your pulse points.  If you are using a 4 oz spray bottle, up the number of essential oil drops to 25-30 to keep the scent strong enough to cover the vodka smell.

Shelf life of Natural Perfume with Essential Oils

Shelf life on your homemade perfume will vary based on how you store it, the quality of the essential oil, the color of your sprayer bottle and more. Generally though, because it is alcohol based, it will keep for quite a while. To extend the shelf life, use a covered refillable perfume bottle, dark amber spray bottles or blue cobalt sprayer bottle and avoid excessive heat or cold. Light and excessive temperatures are the enemies of anything essential oil based so blocking those things as much as possible will help extend the life.
