As someone who blogs full time I am always being asked how to start a blog. While blogging professionally does take a ton of time to build (don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that traffic comes quick), it can be an extremely awesome and rewarding career choice. So just how do you start your own blog? It’s actually easier than you might think!
To start, you’ll need a domain. You can find one pretty quickly with a quick Google search. Make sure that your domain is easy to remember and isn’t too long. Your domain is the web address that people will type in to get to your blog so make sure that you are happy with it since changing it involves a whole lot of work (as we recently found out).
Next, you’ll need a host! When you’re a new blog, the last thing you need is to be paying a ton of money each month for your host. HostGator is a great option for that! They have affordable plans and they offer Automatic updates of your plugins, themes and WordPress if you use it. This can save you a ton of time since you don’t have to worry about updating things on your own. They also offer site malware scanning and removal if your site happens to get infected. I don’t think I need to tell you how important that is!
The biggest thing for me comes down to two things. First, HostGator also offers Sitelock Content Delivery Network. What is a CDN you ask? Well? Short answer is that it helps you avoid having to keep large images and files on your site. That means less cost for you in the long run! Second? HostGator offers CodeGuard daily backup and restores. As someone who has lost everything before? Having a backup that goes all the way down to the file level? So important!
Finally, you’ll need WordPress. Six Dollar Family is run on WordPress and I wouldn’t have it any other way. WordPress is an awesomely free software that the vast majority of blogs on the internet run on. WordPress is totally free to use and as I mentioned above, HostGator automatically updates it for you and even has a new premium product called HostGator Optimized WordPress.
What is Optimized WordPress?
Optimized WordPress is a new hosting platform that is specifically built for an optimized and managed WordPress environment. HostGator will handle all of the core, theme, and plugin updates without the need for any action on your part.
Sounds awesome right? Once you’ve got these three things set up, start writing! Give yourself about 2 weeks worth of content built up before you officially launch and you’ll be on your way to having an awesomely awesome blog!
