We just completed a huge move and since then? My kitchen has been a crazy mess. Between packing and cleaning and everything else involved? It looks kind of like a war zone in there (okay, it’s not quite that bad). On one hand, that’s okay. We just moved, right? Things are expected to be a bit messy. On the other hand, I want my kitchen neat and tidy because a messy kitchen can cause your family budget to get messed up pretty quickly. Not to mention that fact that the kitchen is that one place that most families spend a lot of their time so I think it’s pretty safe to say that most of us want our kitchens to be pretty spiffy looking and feeling, right?
Like I mentioned above, having a messy kitchen can actually cause you to spend more. Don’t believe me? How many cans of soup do you currently have in your pantry? How many baking pans have you bought because you didn’t realize you had one already? How many times has something expired because you forgot you had it? How many times have you eaten out because you had “nothing” to fix for dinner?
Your Messy Kitchen and How It’s Costing You Money
Do you understand now? Needless to say, I try to keep my kitchen pretty organized each day for that exact reason. I don’t want my budget getting out of hand! It’s easy to do if you know what you’re doing! Here’s how I keep my kitchen away from costing me too much money.
Clean and Organize Daily
As I’ve already said, a messy kitchen is a wasteful one and a wasteful kitchen is an expensive kitchen. Because of this, if you really want to save, make absolutely certain that you are cleaning and organizing daily. Wipe down the counters and appliances with a great all-purpose cleaner, straighten the dishes, cookware, and fridge, make sure that the dishes are washed, dried and put away and most importantly?
Use a quality trash bag.
For me, I only use Hefty Ultra Strong with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda trash bags. I love that they’re strong and sturdy enough that I don’t have to worry about rips or tears and the fact that they have A&H Baking Soda in them? Means that there are no nasty smells to deal with since baking soda neutralizes them while providing a few new awesome and invigorating scents to help cover the smell even more! (Yes! They do have a scent-free version too!) I absolutely adore the Clean Burst scent! Plus? They’re a fantastic price and ya’ll know that I just adore a good price on something.
Right now you can score a fantastic deal on Hefty Ultra Strong too! Ibotta users can score $1.00 cash back when they buy Hefty! That’s right! You can be paid to buy your trash bags when you sign up for an Ibotta account! How cool is that? An awesome trash bag with that you’ll get paid to buy!
Limit how many gadgets are in the kitchen
Let’s be real. Most of us have a plethora of gadgets that live either on or under the counter but never get used. Add that to storage bowls, extra dishes and who knows what else and your kitchen suddenly becomes very, very cluttered. That clutter transfers to an everyday waste of money when you’re buying things that you don’t actually need.
Ask for help
Time is money in my home and there’s a good chance that it is in yours too. If you’re spending too much time doing one specific task, you’re wasting money. Long hours spent cooking, hours spent cleaning and so on. To save, you’ll need to ask for help. Emma loves to cook and help so most days, we work together to get things done. This means less dishes (i.e. less money spent on water and soap), less time spent cooking (less natural gas and/or electric costs) and less time spent (time spent = lost wages for me some days). To help yourself save more money in the kitchen, ask your kids or your partner for help.
Saving in the kitchen isn’t too hard to do, but you must keep it clean to even start. Hefty Ultra Strong and a bit of creativity can help you do just that!
